Greek Embassy Celebrates New Year with Traditional Vasilopita Cutting Ceremony

Anovai- The Greek Embassy marked the New Year on Wednesday by hosting its annual vasilopita cutting ceremony, a traditional Greek observance symbolising good fortune and renewal.

The vasilopita is a New Year’s bread prepared with a coin hidden inside, with the recipient of the coin traditionally believed to enjoy luck and prosperity in the year ahead. The custom is linked to the feast of Saint Basil, a central figure in the Greek Orthodox tradition.

In her remarks, Greek Ambassador Irene Rega welcomed the guests and outlined the cultural significance of the tradition, noting its role in promoting unity, generosity, and shared celebration.

The Ambassador encouraged attendees to take part in tasting the bread, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural heritage and communal values.

The ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic community, representatives of the Greek community, and invited guests, providing an opportunity for social exchange and marking the start of the year in a spirit of goodwill and tradition.
