The Shrine of Prophet Joshua

Anovia- Perched on one of the highest hills northwest of Al-Salt, in Jordan’s Balqa Governorate, lies the serene Shrine of Prophet Joshua (Yusha‘ bin Nun) — a site revered for its spiritual significance and breathtaking landscape. Rising about 1,130 meters above sea level, the shrine overlooks the Jordan Valley and the hills of Palestine, offering visitors both a moment of reflection and a view that evokes timeless faith.

According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Joshua was the devoted companion and successor of Prophet Moses (peace be upon them), who led the Israelites into the Promised Land. His shrine in Al-Salt is one of several across the region believed to mark his resting place, but this one holds a special place in Jordan’s religious and cultural heritage. The site has been cared for over generations, blending spirituality with local folklore and respect.

Since ancient times, the people of Al-Salt city have customarily visited this shrine to pray for rain (Istisqa) during periods of drought and scarce rainfall, despite the presence of other shrines in the region.

This spiritual connection is attributed to the fact that Prophet Joshua (Yusha‘) — peace be upon him — was related to the Prophets Moses and Aaron, peace be upon them both.

It is well known that Prophet Moses once prayed for rain for his people, and thus, out of reverence for this sacred bond, the locals became deeply attached to the shrine.

This local tradition is mentioned in the book The Hashemite Reconstruction of the Shrines of Prophets, Companions, and Martyrs in Jordan, published by the Royal Committee for the Reconstruction of the Shrines of Prophets, Companions, and Martyrs, first edition, October 2008, pp. 30–31.

Architecturally, the shrine is simple yet dignified. The tomb, draped in a green cloth, stretches for several meters inside a modest stone structure attached to a small mosque. The surrounding area is shaded by centuries-old oak trees, their roots intertwined with the soil of faith and history. Recent renovations have preserved the authenticity of the site while making it accessible for visitors and pilgrims alike.

Beyond its religious symbolism, the Shrine of Prophet Joshua represents Jordan’s living heritage, a space where spirituality, history, and nature converge. It stands as a testament to the enduring coexistence and reverence shared by communities who see in it a bridge between past and present, earth and heaven.
